Charter of the Organization of American States (30 April 1948)
Date of publication: 30/04/1948
The Organization of American States was set up in 1948 as a regional organisation within the UN system. Headquartered in Washington DC, the Organization includes all American states as its members. The Charter of the Organization contains a firm statement of the classical principles of non-intervention. In particular, Article 19 reads as follows:
No State or group of States has the right to intervene, directly or indirectly, for any reason whatever, in the internal or external affairs of any other State. The foregoing principle prohibits not only armed force but also any other form of interference or attempted threat against the personality of the State or against its political, economic, and cultural elements.
